Guide To Installing A French Drain In Your Yard

If you’re experiencing standing water in your yard or basement, a French drain may be the solution to your drainage problems. A French drain is a trench filled with gravel and perforated pipe that redirects water away from an area. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of installing a French drain in your yard.

Step 1: Choose the Location

The first step in installing a French drain is to choose the location where you want to redirect the water. This is typically the lowest point in your yard where water tends to accumulate. You’ll need to mark the area where the trench will be dug.

Step 2: Dig the Trench

Next, you’ll need to dig a trench that’s about 18-24” deep and 6-8” wide. The trench should slope away from the area where the water is accumulating. It’s important to keep the bottom of the trench level so the water flows evenly through the pipe.

Step 3: Line the Trench with Gravel

Once the trench is dug, you’ll need to line it with a layer of gravel. The gravel should be about 2-3” deep. This will help to filter out debris and prevent the pipe from becoming clogged.

Step 4: Lay the Perforated Pipe

Next, you’ll need to lay the perforated pipe in the trench on top of the layer of gravel. The perforated holes in the pipe should face downwards, towards the gravel.

Step 5: Cover the Pipe with Gravel

After the pipe is laid, you’ll need to cover it with another layer of gravel. The gravel should be about 2-3” deep. This will help to keep the pipe in place and provide additional drainage.

Step 6: Cover the Trench with Soil

Once the gravel is in place, you’ll need to cover the trench with soil. The soil should be mounded above the trench to help encourage water to flow towards the French drain.

Step 7: Maintain the French Drain

To ensure that your French drain continues to function properly, it’s important to maintain it. You’ll need to periodically remove any debris that may accumulate in the drain and ensure that the pipe is not clogged.

Installing a French drain is a great way to redirect water away from an area in your yard. It’s important to choose the right location for the drain and to properly dig and fill the trench with gravel and perforated pipe. With proper installation and maintenance, a French drain can effectively solve your drainage problems and prevent future water damage to your home or property.
